Permafrost controls the displacement rates of large unstable rock-slopes in subarctic environments

چکیده

Determining the link between permafrost and displacement rates of large unstable rock-slopes (LURSs) is fundamental for understanding future hazard scenarios establishing appropriate management strategies. From an inventory >500 LURSs in Norway, we investigate controls those with available information on their (299 LURSs), presenting first statistical evidence as main driver LURSs. The probability a LURS to displace if present now or was during Little Ice Age (LIA) around 2.1 times higher than already absent LIA. This 1.5 current LIA that has since melted. Therefore, our findings enrich classical conception warming increases LURSs, by showing complete thawing can result decrease rate even halt displacement.

Improvements of safety conditions of unstable rock slopes through the use of explosives

The paper discusses operations aimed at creating a safer natural or man made rock slope by artificially inducing the displacement of unstable elements by blasting. A detailed analysis of the problems with the use of explosives present when conducting these activities is carried out focusing on the advantages and disadvantages of this technology. The results of two examples of demolition of inst...

Automated sliding susceptibility mapping of rock slopes

We present a suite of extensions for ARCVIEW GISTM (ESRI) that allows to map the spatial distribution of first-order mechanical slope-properties in hard rock terrain, e.g. for large slope areas like water reservoir slopes. Besides digital elevation data, this expert-system includes regional continuous grid-based data on geological structures that might act as potential sliding or cutoff planes ...

Variability of the groundwater sulfate concentration in fractured rock slopes: a tool to identify active unstable areas

Water chemical analysis of 100 springs from the Orco and the Tinée valleys (Western Italy and Southern France) and a 7 year groundwater chemistry monitoring of the 5 main springs were performed. All these springs drain from crystalline rock slopes. Some of these drain from currently active gravitational slope deformations. All groundwaters flowing through presently unstable slopes show anomalie...

Flexural Toppling Failure in Rock Slopes: From Theory to Applications

Toppling failure is one of the most common modes of failure of rock slopes in layered rock strata. Flexural toppling is one of the well-known modes of the failure. This type of failure occurs due to bending stress. In this article, a brief yet comprehensive review of toppling failure is presented. Firstly, the conditions and general mechanism of the failure are described. Then, experimental, th...

Rock Slopes from Mechanics to Decision Making

Rock slope instabilities are discussed in the context of decision making for risk assessment and management. Hence, the state of the slope and possible failure mechanism need to be defined first. This is done with geometrical and mechanical models for which recent developments are presented. This leads with appropriate consideration of uncertainties to risk determination and to the description ...
